Changes in mangroves at their southernmost African distribution limit

چکیده

Mangroves in South Africa occur at one of the most southerly locations world, which provides a unique opportunity to study their dynamic responses anthropogenic and natural perturbations. The exposed high-energy African coastline restricts mangroves 32 sheltered estuaries 18 (56%) are predominantly open sea. A large area mangrove (47% country total) occurs uMhlathuze Estuary – novel ecosystem formed by creation an artificial mouth. Drivers-Pressures-State-Impacts-Response (DPSIR) framework was applied understand factors change highlight governance management responses. largest (440 ha) lost during construction Durban Bay harbour. Climate related warming increase CO2 positive conditions expand distribution higher latitudes but this will depend on propagule dispersal between availability suitable habitats. Many temporarily closed sea different periods thus limiting recruitment. An intensity freshwater floods scour banks completely remove mangroves. It is important that these understood incorporated into plans so forests can be better protected conserved.

Contrasting Hydraulic Architectures of Scots Pine and Sessile Oak at Their Southernmost Distribution Limits

Many temperate European tree species have their southernmost distribution limits in the Mediterranean Basin. The projected climatic conditions, particularly an increase in dryness, might induce an altitudinal and latitudinal retreat at their southernmost distribution limit. Therefore, characterizing the morphological and physiological variability of temperate tree species under dry conditions i...

Mangroves at Their Limits: Detection and Area Estimation of Mangroves along the Sahara Desert Coast

The northernmost and most arid mangrove ecosystem of West Africa is found in Mauritania, in the Parc National du Banc d’Arguin (PNBA). The existing global and regional maps of Mauritania’s mangroves have little detail, and available estimates of the mangrove area differ among studies. We assessed the use of automated Remote Sensing classification techniques to calculate the extent and map the d...

Decomposition Analysis of Energy Intensity Changes in Industries at the Provincial Level in Iran: Average Distribution of Cross Changes Approach

In this paper energy intensity changes in industries of Iran as a whole and for each province separately have been calculated in the period of 2005-2019. These changes are divided to structural and efficiency effects by using average distribution on the amount of changes in cross method. The results show that during this period, energy intensity has increased throughout the country and in all p...

Seedling establishment of a boreal tree species ( Pinus sylvestris ) at its southernmost distribution limit: consequences of being in a marginal Mediterranean habitat

1 We analyse the factors controlling seedling establishment of Scots pine at its southernmost geographical limit (southern Spain), by monitoring emergence, survival and growth for up to 4 years in the microhabitats to which seeds are dispersed. Naturally established seedlings were monitored in two mountain ranges, and experimental sowings were performed both in woodlands and in adjacent success...

Fine-Scale Genetic Structure of Bull Trout at the Southern Limit of Their Distribution

—We used six polymorphic microsatellite loci to analyze the population genetic structure of bull trout Salvelinus confluentus in the Boise River, Idaho, and we compared our results with previous data from similarly sized river systems in western North America. Within the Boise River, we found low genetic variation within and significant differentiation among sample sites. Two cohesive groups of...
